NHS England to map gender identity services as a first step in achieving equitable access for patients
NHS England is taking action to address inequitable access to services, experienced by patients with gender dysphoria.
As the national commissioner of Gender Identity services, NHS England has the opportunity – for the first time ever – to map current levels of service provision across the country, including the numbers of patients awaiting assessment and treatment, and to scope future demand for the services.
A task and finish group has been established to carry out this work and it is hoped that emerging findings will be available for discussion at the next meeting of NHS England’s Transgender Network at the end of November.
The term ‘gender dysphoria; describes the discomfort felt by people whose innate gender identity – the sense of being a boy/man or girl/woman – conflicts with their visible sex characteristics.
As awareness of this condition has increased, supported by better social, medical and legislative provision for transgender people, so has the demand for the relatively few specialist services which provide care and treatment for patients with gender dysphoria in England.
Prior to the formation of NHS England, these services were commissioned by Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), or by specialised commissioning groups acting on behalf of groups PCTs. This resulted in different sets of commissioning arrangements around the country, hence the variability in access to gender identity clinics and to surgery.
NHS England is committed to improving services for transgender patients and has established a number of initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the issues faced by this particular group of individuals, including:

Mental and behavioural disorders
(F00-F99)
F60 - F69. Disorders of adult personality and behaviour
F64 Gender identity disorders
F64.0 Transsexualism
A desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex, usually accompanied by a sense of discomfort with, or inappropriateness of, one's anatomic sex, and a wish to have surgery and hormonal treatment to make one's body as congruent as possible with one's preferred sex.
F64.1 Dual-role transvestism
The wearing of clothes of the opposite sex for part of the individual's existence in order to enjoy the temporary experience of membership of the opposite sex, but without any desire for a more permanent sex change or associated surgical reassignment, and without sexual excitement accompanying the cross-dressing.
Gender identity disorder of adolescence or adulthood, nontranssexual type
Excl.:fetishistic transvestism (F65.1)
F64.2 Gender identity disorder of childhood
A disorder, usually first manifest during early childhood (and always well before puberty), characterized by a persistent and intense distress about assigned sex, together with a desire to be (or insistence that one is) of the other sex. There is a persistent preoccupation with the dress and activities of the opposite sex and repudiation of the individual's own sex. The diagnosis requires a profound disturbance of the normal gender identity; mere tomboyishness in girls or girlish behaviour in boys is not sufficient. Gender identity disorders in individuals who have reached or are entering puberty should not be classified here but in F66.-.
Excl.:egodystonic sexual orientation (F66.1)
sexual maturation disorder (F66.0)
F64.8 Other gender identity disorders
F64.9 Gender identity disorder, unspecifiedGender-role disorder NOS

Hi
What a fantastic project you have undertaken to show the 'real' lives and experiences of those who identify as Non Binary.
The preview of and the concept of this film has excited me beyond words.
As I see it now is exactly the right time to 'raise awareness' of Non Binary - it gives me hope for the future of those like myself (Gender Reassigned), who have perhaps felt that due to living in a world previously fully locked in a strict Gender binary system, their ONLY way to STAY ALIVE AND WELL was to go through the harrowing process gender reassignment.
Although at present I identify as a Transman, over the last 15 years I have been uncomfortable with and struggled greatly with the terms, gender, man, woman, male and female. In truth these terms are far too rigid or black and white, they do not fit my uniqueness. Therefore, I for one am helped to learn that YES there can be people outside the binary and it is OK to be outside the binary - is it maybe the right time for me to 'step up' too and identify myself as person outside the binary?
Finally, when and from where can I get to view or get a DVD of the full documentary? I am so very very excited to view it in its entirety, as are some of my service users who I have given the link for the preview of 'We Exist' as a link on my website www.ctsar.org
Sending you my very best wishes for great and long lasting success.
